The Wudil Pilot Irrigation Scheme is a 200-hectare scheme located at Kanyar Babale Village near Wudil town 30 Km along Kano-Maiduguri road in Kano State. The Scheme was established in 1979/81 to pilot the development of the proposed Kano River Irrigation Project Phase II, which has a development potential of 40,000 hectares of irrigable land. Out of the total area of the scheme 90.0 hectares were developed for the conduct of irrigation and agronomic trials under gravity (45 ha) and sprinkler (45 ha) irrigation. The first irrigation trials were conducted in March 1981.
Irrigation water for the scheme is being pumped from the Kano River through a 7.2 kilometer pipeline delivering about 300 liters per second of water for storage in a 10,000 m3 night storage reservoir. The water stored in the reservoir s being used to irrigated the gravity area through a distributory canal and a network of field channels. The sprinkler area is supplied with water using 5 Nos pressure pumps with a combine discharge of 202 liters per second. The remaining area of the scheme is being used for rainfed agriculture but could be developed for irrigation in future. Other facilities on the scheme include and office block, workshop, stores, staff houses, water supply/treatment plant and a meteorological station. The scheme is slated for full rehabilitation and remodeling under the 2013 appropriation act.
